Bellona is a city at the deadcenter of the United States. Something has happened there…. The populationhas fled. Madmen and criminals wander the streets. Strange portents appear inthe cloud-covered sky. Into this disaster zone comes a young man—poet, lover, and adventurer—known only as the Kid.
Tackling questions of race, gender, and sexuality, Dhalgren is a literary marvel and groundbreaking work ofAmerican magical realism.
Another description:
A mysterious disaster hasstricken the midwestern American city of Bellona, and its aftereffects aredisturbing: a city block burns down and is intact a week later; clouds coverthe sky for weeks, then part to reveal two moons; a week passes for one personwhen only a day passes for another. The catastrophe is confined to Bellona, andmost of the inhabitants have fled. But others are drawn to the devastated city, among them the Kid, a white/American Indian man who can’t remember his ownname. The Kid is emblematic of those who live in the new Bellona, who are theyoung, the poor, the mad, the violent, the outcast–the marginalized.
